For those of you who were grossly disappointed in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful Season 3 finale and the series being cancelled, guess what? Penny Dreadful will live on, but not on TV like we originally wanted. No, the series shall continue on in comic book form and it shall continue the series months after the events of the final episode.
Due to the highly positive reception of the prequel Penny Dreadful comic book series by Titan Comics that was released this past spring, this new Penny Dreadful comic book series was greenlit. Unlike the prequel series, this new series will take place six months after (SPOILERS) Vanessa Ives’ death. It will be the closest thing we get to a Season 4 of the Penny Dreadful series. The new series will be written by the show’s co-executive producer Chris King, with art by Jesús Hervás.
This isn’t the first time a popular show has lived on through the comic book medium. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, after its cancellation, ended up having its official Season 8 live on through a comic book series published by Dark Horse. Titan Comics, in particular, has been making a career of reviving the interest in cancelled series by continuing on adventures via comics. Their Torchwood revival is the best example of this.
The overall summary of the Penny Dreadful series is below:
Explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein and medium Vanessa Ives unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.
The new Penny Dreadful comic will be released sometime in early 2017. In the meantime, take a look at this mashup of all three of Penny Dreadful’s Season trailers. Would you be interested in a comic book series like this? Let us know in the comments below.
