It was announced by CBS that actors Anthony Rapp and Doug Jones would be joining Michelle Yeoh as official cast members of the upcoming TV series Star Trek: Discovery.
Doug Jones will play Lt. Saru, a Starfleet science officer and a member of an alien species that is brand new to the Star Trek universe we know. Anthony Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet science officer aboard the starship Discovery. They are joining Michelle Yeoh, who has been cast in an undisclosed role that may or may not pertain to the lead female lieutenant commander character we’ve been hearing rumors about.
Jones is most known for playing fantasy roles such as the Pale Man pictured above from Pan’s Labyrinth. He’s also played Abe Sapien in Hellboy and the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. He’s a frequent collaborator with director Guillermo del Toro.
Rapp is most well known for his work on Broadway, having originated the role of Mark Cohen in the Broadway musical Rent, which he also reprised the role of in the film adaptation of the show. He’s made numerous television appearances on shows like Psych: The Musical, The Knick, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Hearing about this casting news means that maybe, just maybe, we are moving past all of the various delays that have kept production on this new Star Trek series from finally happening. The series’ premiere has been bumped back quite a bit. Then there was Bryan Fuller stepping down from the series. Maybe now that casting is finally happening, we are getting somewhere with this series.
