For fans of Harry Potter across the pond, it is time to rejoice!

It was announced on Pottermore that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is planned to be performed on Broadway sometime in 2018. After the wild success of the play in London, it was naturally expected that they might be bringing the play overseas to the United States.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender shared their thoughts about bringing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to Broadway and how they were going about the planning process:

‘The moment we opened in the West End, the inevitable question was ‘when are you going to Broadway?’ Sonia told us. ‘So we brought the creative team to New York in September this year to look at many of the beautiful theatres in New York city.’

They knew that the show they were going to be putting on required a theatre that could handle all the various amounts of drama that the play serves up as well as making the experience still reflect the feeling that the play brought to the West End in London. So, after a careful process of selection, they decided upon the Lyric theatre and are currently going through the process of figuring out how to completely re-design it to accomodate the vision they are going for:

‘When the redesigned Lyric was presented to us as an idea and what the possibilities could be, we re-thought the whole thing and totally fell in love with the notion of a theatre being created especially for the Cursed Child, overseen by designer Christine and our director John Tiffany,’ Sonia explained.

‘We are still subject to planning, but assuming we get the go ahead, we will have the theatre of our dreams that will be intimate enough for a drama, yet big enough for us to follow in the footsteps of the London production and continue to provide low priced tickets throughout the auditorium.’

The amount of work to go into bringing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to Broadway seems endless when looking through all the tentative plans that Sonia and Colin have for the production via the Pottermore article. However, with the Harry Potter fan community and with the support of J.K. Rowling, I feel confident that the show will be executed in a way that will bring happiness and satisfaction to everyone involved with the production as well as the fans.

What do you think of this news? Have you read the script yet to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child? How do you think the play will do on Broadway? What are YOUR expectations? Let us know in the comments below.
