This week’s Blindspot, Devil Never Even Lived, begins in a bunker. The Sandstorm bunker to be more precise. Borden or should I say Nigel Thornton is overseeing the work being done below him. One of the operatives, Parker, questions Borden’s decision to modify the construction being done. First, Borden reminds Parker of the chain of command and is to be addresses as “sir,” and second, the modifications are being done because he says so. Parker goes to deliver the modifications, but you can see he’s not happy about it.

But we’ll get back to that later, right now, Patterson and Nas have called a meeting. They fill everyone in on Kat Jarett and the Viper Kings and the link to the tattoo. The current hypothesis is the leopard tattoo was left off of Jane because a border patrol agent, Tom Ferrell, was caught running guns over the Canadian border, and with the corruption exposed, there was no need to include the tat. But they still need to figure out how the Viper Kings are involved. Jane wants to use Roman and see if they can trigger more memories, but everyone is skeptical. Eventually, they bring in Dr. Sun and allow her to talk to Roman.

Dr. Sun shows the photos to Roman. He doesn’t remember anything at first, but with a little prodding and mood sounds, he has a flashback. He used to buy weapons and explosives from the Kings. And he felt important.

This is great, but what should they do now? Jane wants to take Roman out into the field and hopes just seeing Roman will get them in, plus more memories might be triggered. This is shot down initially, but Weller agrees to do it, because they really don’t have many options at this point. Roman and the Viper Kings are their only solid lead.

Roman agrees to help, even though he’s very hesitant. The plan is to bring Jane in as Remi and set up a buy and meet with Shepherd. After that, there will be a sting operation to take everyone down, but that’s for later. Right now, they just need Roman to get them in the door.

Roman and Jane head over to the Viper Kings hangout, The Nest. All eyes are on them as Roman has a flashback. He remembers Jane telling him to stop seeing Kat. He’s gotten too close to her, and with her about to infiltrate the FBI, she needs him to be focused. He seems reluctant.

Now they have a problem. Kat sees Roman and Remi, walks up to them, and punches Roman in the face. They want to talk and see the Viper King leader, Abel. This was not a part of the plan. They were going to work on Kat, and slowly get the meeting with Abel. However, with his memories resurfacing, Roman decides to improvise. Surprisingly, Kat agrees, but only because she thinks Abel will kill them.

She leads them into the backroom, where Abel is working over a guy. He’s not happy to see Roman. He wants to know where he’s been. Roman says he was shot by Shepherd not long after his last meeting with the Viper Kings. Remi saved him and helped him recover. He’s different but better. Now, they want revenge on Shepherd, and want the Viper Kings to help. Abel doesn’t want to take sides, but Roman makes him an offer he can’t refuse. They help him and Remi set up a weapons drop with Shepherd, and not only do they get to keep the money, but they can also keep the goods, which in this case are HMX explosives. Roman can get the explosives for them.

Abel agrees and Roman and Jane go back to the FBI. Weller is not happy about this. No one is, but it was the best idea given the circumstances. Nas calls in a favor and gets just enough HMX to fool Abel. The rest is fake. The plan is Roman and Jane will go with Abel to hijack a truck carrying the HMX. So far so good, Roman and Jane bring the plan to Abel.

Abel agrees with this, but he wants Kat to drive the car. Fine. Kat snuggles up close to Roman on his bike, and he, Jane, and the Viper Kings head out to meet the truck. They approach it, and Roman gets the driver and co-driver to pull over. It’s Weller and Reade.

They’re forced out of the truck, while Abel inspects the goods. The HMX passes his test. Roman and Jane want to go, but Abel instructs them to kill Weller and Reade first. No witnesses. Jane protests, but Abel demands it. He thinks they’re working for the cops. He’s right, but to prove them wrong, Roman turns and fires. Weller and Reade go down, and the others leave.

Don’t worry, Reade and Weller had vests on. But they were a little concerned as to whether Roman knew that.

Yes, Roman did. He tells Jane later on, he did it because he knew if he didn’t, Abel would shoot them in the head, then shoot him and Jane. Jane’s still not comfortable with this, but what can she do? Kat brings news Shepherd responded and a meet was being set up, then she and Roman have a little talk.

They get a little close, Roman holds her hand, and remembers being in bed with Kat. They were talking about running away together and Roman feeling like he’s always under Jane and Shepherd’s thumbs. They held hands, and Kat tells him she loves him. They kiss, but after, Roman leaves.

Jane and him talk back at the FBI. She recognized the look on his face at the bar. She knows he remembered something. He tells her, then asks why is he still in the cage? He wants out. She wants him out too. They’re working on it.

Soon, it’s time for them to get back to the Nest. They’re going to meet Abel and Kat and go to Shepherd, but when they get there, something is off. They head to Abel’s office, and only find Kat, who has a gun trained on them. Abel didn’t believe they weren’t working for the cops. Neither does she. The Roman she knew never held her hand. Oops. Jane tries to cover, but Roman agrees. They are working for the cops. He says it’s the only way he could see her again. He loves her, and if they can just see this all through and get Shepherd, then the two of them can run away together. Kat seems unsure.

We don’t see what happens next, but we do hear two gunshots. The few men who were at the bar turn and see Kat exit the office. She tells them to get rid of the bodies. The guys go in, but it’s ruse. Roman and Jane are alive. They attack the men, the commotion is heard in the bar, and one guy questions Kat. She tells him it’s none of his business, but he doesn’t back down, and they’re drawn into a gunfight. Kat gets hits, and dies telling Roman she loves him.

The FBI had been outside, ready to get to the address for the meet. Luckily, Kat gave Roman and Jane the info. They speed to the location, see the truck carrying the goods, and spread out, but something is off. The building is condemned and hasn’t been opened in years. They approach the truck and find it empty, except for the dead bodies of the Viper Kings, including Abel. Sandstorm knew something was off and took care of it.

While the team tries to figure out how Sandstorm knew, Nas and Weller have a talk. Nas believes their being together is clouding their judgment. She breaks it off with him. Jane talks with Roman, and he’s worried. When he told Kat he loved her, he was lying. He felt nothing. Jane doesn’t handle this news too well, but she believes Roman is capable of love, and that feelings are not like memories. They have to be earned.

We check back in with Borden and Sandstorm. It turns out it was Parker’s idea to take out the Viper Kings. Borden thought his plan was reckless and wouldn’t work, but they got lucky. But something about Parker bothers him. He asks Parker why he’s with Sandstorm. Parker wants to see the world burn.

Jane stops by Weller’s apartment. He had told her about Allie leaving for Colorado, and how the apartment now felt empty, knowing his baby wasn’t going to be there. Jane comes over with Pennsylvanian beer and offers to keep him company. She sees him working on the files Nas got from her Sandstorm informant about him. Jane offers to help look through them. She finds his yearbook and spots a photo of him playing basketball. But that’s not the important part. What’s important is Jane recognizes a woman in the stands. It’s Shepherd. Weller looks at the photo and at Shepherd, and we end with Weller remembering who Shepherd was.

Other points of interest

~ Reade is visited by Freddy’s girlfriend, Niki. She wants to know where Freddy is. Reade pretends he doesn’t know but feels bad, because Niki appears to feel it’s her fault Freddy disappeared. He tells Zapata about Niki, but she tells him to leave it alone. There’s nothing he can do. Later, Niki comes back to Reade’s apartment. She wants to apologize for blaming him. He accepts. Niki notices the bruises on Reade’s chest. They’re from the bullet impacting his vest. She touches it, and in what I can only assume a moment of vulnerability, Reade and Niki kiss. Then they do a whole lot more. There is no way this ends well for Reade.

~ Patterson is a little annoyed everyone is saying Roman solved the leopard tattoo code. She did most of the work, but eventually just sucks it up.

~ Due to the circumstances, Jane changes the leopard tattoo theory. She now believes it was left off of her because it could be traced back to Sandstorm.

~ Patterson wants to be at the meeting when Shepherd is caught. She’s struggling with what happened with Borden. She lashes out at Nas, who understands what she’s going through and wants to help.

~ Roman wants Shepherd captured alive. He wants to know why she erased his memory.

I can’t wait for Patterson and Borden to meet again. It’s not going to be pretty. It’s good to see Roman and Jane getting closer, but it’s definitely going to fall apart when he learns the truth. I don’t see a happy future for Roman, but a part of me wishes he could go somewhere remote and just live his life away from everything and everyone, including Jane. He could use a chance at a normal life.
