Yes, Godzilla 2 actually is happening. This world has a hunger for kaiju and Hollywood has the means to deliver. Helming the follow-up to Gareth Edward‘s 2014 film is Krampus director Michael Dougherty.

At first, Dougherty was only supposed to pen Godzilla 2 with Krampus co-writer Zach Shields. Rumors surfaced that he would also direct the flick, but that was not the case according to insiders. Legendary did eventually extended an offer to direct as well, and evidently, he took it.

Back in October 2015, Legendary and Warner Bros. made a joint announcement that all forthcoming King Kong and Godzilla movies will be developed by Legendary and distributed by Warner Bros., beginning with Kong: Skull Island in March 2017. Legendary currently holds a distribution deal with Universal. The studio, however, decided to send the rights back over to Warner Bros. They wanted to re-team Godzilla and King Kong so they can eventually develop their own MonsterVerse (the official cinematic universe’s name), and pit them against each other in a future film.

Godzilla 2 is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on March 22, 2019. Godzilla vs. Kong is set for May 29, 2020.
