With all the force of a great typhoon.
Disney has officially selected the director for Mulan and continues to add more inclusion to the teams behind their major motion pictures. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Whale Rider and MacFarland USA director Niki Caro will be taking the reigns on the live-action adaptation of the hit animated movie. This will be the New Zealand native’s second collaboration with Disney after the critically acclaimed MacFarland USA. For that project Caro lived in central California for a year to immerse herself and get to know Mexican-American culture. And recently, Jessica Chastain praised Caro for having all genders represented on the set of their next film The Zookeeper’s Wife.
Also noted on the report is that directors considered for the film included Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman), Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones). And that Caro was also on the shortlist for Captain Marvel along with Lesli Linka Glatter (Homeland) and Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World). Getting Mulan though probably takes her out of the running for Captain Marvel though.
We’re eagerly anticipating finding out what direction the Mulan live-action will go in and whether it will keep it’s comedic and musical moments. We hope it does! We also can’t wait to find out who will be playing Mulan since Disney promised to keep the cast all Chinese. Fingers crossed for awesome talents like Lin Yun (The Mermaid) or Jing Tian (The Great Wall).
