Today is International Women’s Day and this year, it’s particularly important with our rights being attacked right now. Today is also A Day Without a Woman. As the official site says, we’re joining the protest, “recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system–while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity. We recognize that trans and gender nonconforming people face heightened levels of discrimination, social oppression and political targeting. We believe in gender justice.”
Now, I recognize that not everyone can take the day off. I certainly can’t. However, Legion of Leia will be taking off in protest. (I wrote this on Tuesday and scheduled it, in case you’re wondering.) If you’re like me and have to work, there are other things you can do. The official site explains:
Anyone, anywhere, can join by making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, in one or all of the following ways:
-
Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor
-
Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
-
Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman
We also have a guide on how to protest and fight back, from Legion of Leia writer Dorina Arellano.
Do what you can and keep fighting! May the Force be with you!
