New Alien: Covenant Poster Resembles the Gates of Hell
A new poster for Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant was released today via Twitter, and it’s bone-chilling.
Anyone with a love of art history will immediately recognize what inspired the design for the new Alien: Covenant poster. We all know that Xenomorphs are bad news. They leave a trail of death and devastation wherever they go, so what better than to pull from some of history’s greatest pieces depicting Hell?
Let us first take a look at the full poster above. You’ll notice that a large batch of Xenomorphs and face huggers are pulling down and climbing over human bodies to ascend toward a light overhead. There are two notable pieces of artwork that seem to have inspired the poster, Auguste Rodin’s The Gates of Hell (left) and Jan van Eyck’s classic diptych portraying The Crucifixion / The Last Judgment (right). You can click on the pictures below to get a better look.
The Gates of Hell is a sculpture that stands just under 20 feet tall. It depicts a scene from Dante Aligheri’s Divine Comedy. To the right, you’ll also notice that the Alien poster closely resembles the tangled bodies as depicted in the descent into hell section of The Last Judgment, which is currently on display at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Alien: Covenant comes to theaters on May 19, 2017.
