The Best Songs About Pi

Happy Pi Day, everyone! March 14 is a day on which we celebrate our favorite irrational number. Get it? March 14? 3-14? Eh? Eh? Yeah you get it. But what is it if not a cherry-filled treat? Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. It also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.

Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits. — Pi Day

In honor of Pi Day, we’ve collected all of the best songs about it. As a bonus, we’ve even added a video of Danica McKeller (Winnie from The Wonder Years) explaining Pi in a fun way. So sit back, relax, and enjoy some tunes while you eat a delicious tray of pie.

3.14 from Cowboy Bebop OST 4, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (1998)

Okay, so this song isn’t explicitly about Pi, but the numbers are sung at the end. It’s a cute little ditty that reminds us about the best anime series on the face of this Earth. And who better to sing it than the show’s most eccentric character, Ed? It’s all in Japanese until she gets to the numbers, so here’s a link to the lyrics if you’re wondering what she’s saying. I’ll give you a preview: “Circle’s an eye ball / Circles are pretty / Black grapes’ / Sweet flavor.” Yeah…it’s best just to learn the Japanese words. It’ll make you sound smarter.

Hard ‘n Phirm – Pi

Chris Hardwick is such a big nerd about Pi, he and Mike Phirman wrote a song about it. Then they made a music video in the style of a 70s educational variety show that takes a turn.

“3.14159 is just the beginning of the infinite and irrational constant Pi of which Hard ‘N Phirm (Chris Hardwick and Mike Phirman) sing. The mystical and magical properties of Pi have enchanted and bewildered wizard and humankind alike over the centuries, but with this song Hard ‘N Phirm are casting a musical spell to achieve oneness with this universal constant.”

The Irrationally Long Number Pi Song (“Sweet Number Pi”)

College Humor try their hand at singing about Pi as well. Only they take things a bit further and try to go through all the numbers. It’s just as irrational as the number.

The Pi Episode: Math Bites with Danica McKellar

Yes! Winnie from The Wonder Years all grow’d up to teach us all about math. Okay, this one isn’t a song about Pi, but she does make learning all about it seem fun and interesting. Don’t let her star status fool you. She earned a Phd. in Mathematics and wrote a number of books about how math doesn’t actually suck. She’s one smart cookie.
