Legion of Leia Podcast Ep. 63: Russ Pitts, Take This and Mental Health at Conventions

On this week’s Legion of Leia podcast, Anastasia Washington and I welcome Russ Pitts, one of the founders of TakeThis.org, an organization that helps bring awareness of mental health issues to the geek community. If you check out the website, you’ll likely recognize where the name comes from. “It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this,” is a reference to the 1986 video game The Legend of Zelda, where an old man gives Link a sword to take on his journey. One of the very cool things that Take This does is provide AFK (away from keyboard) rooms at conventions where you can sit and relax, and get away from the crowds. There are mental health professionals who serve the geek community there to help if you need it. It’s a pretty wonderful idea, and I’m so glad to have had Russ on to talk about this. You can watch the origin of Take This in the trailer below and scroll down for the podcast. You can also donate for a few more hours to the Take This Kickstarter to help support the AFK rooms and bring them to more conventions.

We’ve also got a big discussion about that Marvel blaming their drop in comic book sales executive on adding female and diverse characters. Oh, this one is a doozy. Believe me, there is a LOT to say about that! I will try not to sputter with anger. We’re also taking on the whitewashing controversy around Ghost In the Shell and what the studio could have done differently.

We also take on the new trailer for The Mummy and why we’re all interested, despite ourselves. Oh, and then there are those Pirates of the Caribbean TV spots. Why did we need another one of these?

Check out the podcast below and make sure to subscribe on iTunes and leave us reviews! May the Force be with you!
