Orange is the New Black: Season 5 trailer goes bang

Netflix has just released a brand new trailer for the fifth season of Orange Is the New Black and things are about to go down! Season 5 will begin right after the end of season 4, and will take place in real time over three days. The official tagline states that we’re, “leaving the inmates’ lives forever changed as they are emboldened to fight for redemption, resolution and the respect they deserve.” If you recall, and yes, this means SPOILERS for the end of season 4, Poussey (Samira Wiley) was killed by a guard and now the prison is rioting.

In the trailer, we see Daya (Dascha Polanco) pointing a gun at the guard responsible, with the rest of the inmates egging her on to shoot him. Piper (Taylor Schilling) and Alex (Laura Prepon) are walking towards it, discussing how they’re going to stay out of trouble. It’s a pretty sure bet that they won’t be able to.

As you may know, last February, Orange Is the New Black was renewed for a fifth, sixth and seventh season. Knowing that there are plenty of episodes in which to continue the story likely allowed them to do a mere three days for this season. This is a new thing for the Netflix series. I don’t know about you, but I felt like the last two seasons were a lot of jokey filler and only a few moments that had any impact. I’ve loved the series since I began watching it, so that was a disappointment. Having the entire season take place during and likely after the riot might give the show a chance to get back to its roots. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, of course. Do you agree?
