What We’ve Learned at the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Panel
First of all…THERE’S AN OFFICIAL TEASER TRAILER FOR THE LAST JEDI!!! Second we get a few bits of information about what to expect in the next installment to the Star Wars franchise. And because we love you, you can watch the whole Star Wars: The Last Jedi Panel above, as well as the teaser trailer below. There’s also a new poster you don’t want to miss.
Hosting the the Star Wars: The Last Jedi Panel at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando was Josh Gad, best known for voicing the character Olaf in Disney’s Frozen. More recently, he starred in a few Instagram videos while on the set of Murder on the Orient Express prying his co-star Daisy Ridley for a few answers for which we’ve all been yearning to hear (but not really because spoilers).
First to grace the stage at the panel are Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, and writer/director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Rian Johnson. Johnson confirms that the movie is currently in post-production. The director also hung out with the fans until 3:00 AM the previous night! Kennedy (along with the other cast members) praises Johnson for his “amazing uniqueness” as a writer and director.
In terms of brining in a new style to the Star Wars movie series, Kennedy says that Johnson “is on his way to standing alongside many of the great filmmakers I’ve had the opportunity to work with.” She goes on to say “[Johnson] writes as beautifully as he directs…and he writes amazingly fierce and independent women. He’s also got a great sense of humor.”
Rian Johnson also loved taking behind the scenes pictures with his own Leica camera. “I realized I was one of the only people who could take pictures and not get punched in the face for it,” he joked.
Next on the stage is Daisy Ridley. Immediately, Gad begins questioning her the meat and potatoes of our most burning questions: Is she and Luke Skywalker blood related? Is her last name Skywalker? Is her last name Kenobi? Or is she just the Madonna of Jakku with her one name?
Of course she couldn’t answer any of those, but Daisy does say that we will go deeper into Rey’s story. Last we left saw in The Force Awakens, Rey meets with Luke Skywalker. She has a certain expectation when it comes to being trained by Luke. We as an audience don’t know what exactly that expectation is, but there’s a distinct hint that lends to the old adage, “Don’t meet your heroes.”
After a fun, brief appearance from BB-8, John Boyega walks on to the stage next to let us in on the status of Finn’s condition. In case you forgot, Finn got a taste of lightsaber up and down his back. According to Boyega, Finn is, in fact, recovering. He will be back for The Last Jedi, and he’s “not playing around this time!” Other notes of worth are that the Finn and Poe bromance is still going strong. Like with Rey, we’ll get to go deeper with Finn as a character. This time around, he will have to decide if he wants to continue running from the First Order or officially join the Resistance.
Unfortunately Oscar Isaac couldn’t come to the panel today, but we do get to meet a new character! Kelly Marie Tran introduces her character, Rose. Rose is a maintenance worker for the Resistance. She’s not looking to be a hero, but somehow does get pulled into the adventure that is Star Wars. Mark Hamill later says about Kelly, “If she could be any cuter, she’d be a Disney character.”
Speaking of Mark Hamill, he is the last cast member to appear on the panel. He doesn’t reveal much about his own role in the film, but Kathleen Kennedy adds herself that Luke Skywalker is “so significantly important to The Last Jedi.” From what we see in the teaser (below), it looks as though he might be the catalyst for the end of the Jedi as we know it. Oh yes. I have a feeling things are going to get heavy in this upcoming installment to the Skywalker Saga.
The crew wraps things up with revealing the first official teaser poster for The Last Jedi, which is shown below, and then the long awaited first trailer of the film. Can you say goosebumps?
