Will Smith in Talks to Play Genie in Live-Action Aladdin

According to a report by Deadline, Will Smith is in talks to play Genie in Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin. Disney is currently on a streak of adapting their animated classics into live-action. After the success of the live-action Cinderella, Jungle Book, and the recent Beauty and the Beast, Disney is moving ahead with adapting Dumbo and Aladdin for the big screen.

I personally feel, as I am sure others are as well, really weird about Will Smith taking on this role. For many of us, the late Robin Williams’ vocal performance as the Genie stole the show in the animated classic. However, given Smith’s comedy and vocal background, I am going to try to give him the benefit of the doubt if he does actually sign onto this role. For now, nothing has been signed yet.

John August has written the adaptation of the original animated classic. The adaptation is being produced by Dan Lin. The executive producer is Jonathan Eirich. Guy Ritchie will be directing.

No other casting announcements have been made, though Lin has previously stated that they are looking to acquire a diverse cast for this film. No release dates have been officially set.

What do you think of Will Smith potentially playing Genie? How does it make you feel? Are you for or against it? Let us know in the comments below.
