Here’s Our First Official Look at The Greatest Showman
The first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s biopic-musical about P.T. Barnum drops today. The Greatest Showman stars Hugh Jackman as Barnum, who starts as a down-on-his-luck guy in need of a career change. So naturally, he sets out to become the ringleader of “The Greatest Show on Earth.” You can take a look at the trailer below.
The Greatest Showman is an “original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.”
The real P.T. Barnum was an odd duck in real life as well. After coming up with the concept of the American circus, he eventually became an active politician as well as an abolitionist. While he did do some good, he also did a few not-so-great things such as produce and promote blackface minstrelsy. His brand of minstrelsy shows, however, offered up double-edged humor, satirizing the “superiority” of white people. So…that makes it better? (I ain’t touchin’ that argument any further.)
Also starring in The Greatest Showman are Zac Efron, Zendaya, Michelle Williams, Paul Yates, and Rebecca Ferguson. The screenplay was written by Bill Condon (Chicago, Dreamgirls) and Jenny Bicks (Sex and the City, What a Girl Wants).
The film debuts in theaters nationwide this Christmas.
