Take a Look Inside Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns

The character Mary Poppins, who was first brought to life by Julie Andrews in the 1964 film, has lived within the hearts and minds of generations. When Disney announced that they’re making a sequel, we’ve been itching to learn more about it. While the sequel, titled Mary Poppins Returns, isn’t due until Christmas 2018, we can still catch a glimpse of what’s in store. Entertainment Weekly just released official photos from the Disney production showing off the new cast. You can take a look at the gallery below. One thing we’re happy about is that they’re keeping with the aesthetic of the previous movie. If it ain’t broke….

The original film was loosely based on the first two volumes of P.L. Travers’ eight-book series, telling the story of how Mary Poppins changed the heart of an absent father and brought him back into the lives of his children. Disney never went beyond those first two books, which is a shame. The other six have so much more to tell.

Mary Poppins Returns, directed by Rob Marshall (Into the Woods), picks up 25 years after Mary Poppins, changing the whimsical streets of 1910 to London’s mid-1930’s economic slump — the actual time period of Travers’ books. Banker and artist Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw) now resides in 17 Cherry Tree Lane with his three kids. The sudden death of his wife has left the Banks family shattered. Not even Michael’s sister Jane (Emily Mortimer), now a union organizer, nor their long-time housemaid Ellen (Julie Walters) are able to life the family’s spirits. As a result, the once thriving house is facing foreclosure.

Enter Mary Poppins (now played by Emily Blunt) who leads the whole Banks family on a series of adventures — from the top of Big Ben to the bottom of the ocean. Hey! We even get to meet one or two of Mary’s own family, one of them being Meryl Streep. Mary Poppins was able to bring a spark back into the Bankses before, what’s to say she can’t do it again?
