Today Starz released two new clips on their Youtube channel introducing the newest character, Essie MacGown, played by Emily Browning. In the novel, Essie’s surname is Tregowan. Considered an ancestor of Laura Moon, she is a Cornish woman who ended up becoming a con artist, a thief, and a prostitute.
Does that sound familiar?
However, her connection to Laura via blood is not the only important part. Essie is the connection that brought Mad Sweeney over to the States. Why? She has always believed in the fae, especially leprechauns due to the luck they are supposed to bring to those who believe in them. She leaves out offerings to show her belief as evidenced by one of the clips below.
Here is the official synopsis for the show:
“American Gods” posits a different kind of war brewing—one between Old Gods and New. The traditional Old Gods, with mythological roots from around the world, fear irrelevance as their believers die off or are seduced by the money, technology, and celebrity offered by the New Gods. Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is an ex-con who, left adrift by the recent death of his wife, becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to conman Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). But in truth, Mr. Wednesday is a powerful old deity, on a cross-country mission to build an army and reclaim his lost glory.
Make sure you check out the clips below and let us know your thoughts.
Once falsely convicted of being a thief, Essie decides it’s time to make that true.
Essie worships her god, the leprechaun by giving the only money she possesses.
