Studio Ghibli is Opening its Own Theme Park in 2020
Start planning your trip to Japan, Hayao Miyazaki fans. Studio Ghibli is opening its own theme park in Aichi’s Expo Park in Nagoya, Japan in 2020.
The park is based entirely on My Neighbor Totoro, according to Chunichi Web, which was translated by Anime News Network. My Neighbor Totoro is widely regarded as the most iconic and most successful of all the Ghibli films. It was written and directed by Studio Ghibli’s co-founder Hayao Miyazaki in 1988.
The theme park itself will be new, but Aichi’s Expo Park already has a replica of Satsuki and Mei’s house as seen in My Neighbor Totoro. Both Studio Ghibli and the Expo Park will be splitting the cost of the park, which is about 200 acres — the largest installation Ghibli has ever done.
While fans wait for the park to open, they can travel to the Ghibli Museum located in Mitaka, Tokyo. There’s no word yet on if Ghibli will eventually expand to include other beloved titles such as Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, and so on.
