Hot Pie has His Own Bakery, ‘You Know Nothing John Dough’

A lot of us were surprised when Arya’s friend Hot Pie (Ben Hawkey) reappeared alive and well in the second episode of Season 7’s Game of Thrones. So what has Hawkey been up to since his character and Arya (Maisie Williams) parted ways back in 2013? Perfecting Hot Pie’s incredibly adorable Direwolf bread, apparently. It gets even better — Hawkey’s bakery is called…wait for it…You Know Nothing John Dough!

Ever since Hot Pie gave Arya her first Dire loaf, our hearts melted as much as the butter and honey he probably used to make it. The more kitchen-savvy of us immediately put on their aprons and tried to recreate a recipe of their own. Chelsea from Inn at the Crossroads managed to recreate Hot Pie’s second attempt at making Direwolf bread with a little help from Karyn Booth, food stylist for the show at the time.

YouTube’s Nerdy Nummies chef, Rosanna Pansino, took the recipe a little further and added a bit of orange zest. Where the Inn a the Crossroads’ recipe is a bit more on the scone side, Pansino’s version has a “hearty and buttery bread” quality to it.

As for Hawkey’s version, his loaves are made from “wholewheat cornbread with orange zest.” It is said that they’re best served slightly warm with soft butter.

“Hot Pie’s Direwolf loaves are a favourite for Game of Thrones fans, and people are always asking me for the secret of my recipe,” said Hawkey. “I can’t share that, but Deliveroo customers will have the chance to try them themselves. You don’t even need to take a dangerous walk down the King’s Road to visit, it comes to you.”

Hawkey officially opened his bakery exclusively through Deliveroo on July 17, 2017, just in time for the start of Season 7 of The Game of Thrones. Deliveroo is an online service that delivers food from available, local restaurants directly to customers’ homes. If you live in the U.K., you can fully take advantage of this service. Just search “You Know Nothing John Dough” in the app, and bam. Direwolf bread at £1 each.

Lucky bastards.

New episodes of Games of Thrones airs Sundays at 9:00 PM EST on HBO. You can also catch it, and the rest of the series, on HBO Go and HBO Now.
