SDCC 2017: Captain Marvel Will Take on Skrulls and the 90s
During Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday night, the studio dropped some interesting information concerning the upcoming Captain Marvel movie, starring Brie Larson. For starters, the movie will be set in the 90s as a sort of prequel to the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe. Second, the big baddies are the Skulls.
It has already been reported that Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury, but now we know that the still director of S.H.I.E.L.D. will have both of his eyes. Gasp! Will we finally see what led to his donning the iconic eye patch in the first place?
The biggest reveal came when Marvel announced that the Skrulls, a race of shape-shifting aliens with a penchant for turning the entire superhero community completely upside-down in the comics, are finally coming to the MCU.

Whoever brokered that deal with Fox should get a bonus in their salary, if they haven’t already.
At the time, many fans thought the Skrulls would be the ones to invade New York alongside Loki in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. But the entire alien race was closer associated with the Fantastic Four and, therefore, owned by Fox. So the movie went with the Chitauri instead.
How Marvel Studios managed to get back the Skrulls, but this suddenly blows a few new possibilities for the MCU wide open. A story for another day, I suppose.
So now it seems that the MCU is co-opting yet another decade. Guardians of the Galaxy has firmly planted its roots in music from the ’70s, and Thor: Ragnarok is finally embracing the ’80s tone-wise with its vibrant colors and the appropriate use of synth music in the latest trailer, Now we are being transported back to the 1990s in Captain Marvel. Please tell me they’re going to sneak in a Spice Girls song somewhere in there.
