SDCC 2017: Stranger Things 2 Goes to Full-On Thriller Mode

The first official trailer for Stranger Things 2 is here! It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) has been rescued from the Upside Down, but that place isn’t done with him and everyone else who has survived. You can take a look at the trailer below.

“They’re just trying to sweep everything under a rug and pretend everything is fine and back to normal, and it’s not,” co-creator Matt Duffer told USA Today. “People have been affected psychologically, and then there are some potentially supernatural after-effects.”

Will especially is still being affected by what happened to him in the Upside Down. As we see in the trailer, he’s either hallucinating or getting visions of whatever’s coming next. The Season 1 finale didn’t exactly leave on a happy note for Will. There’s definitely still something going on with him, but we don’t know what it is apart from spewing up otherworldly slugs. According to Duffy, things don’t really get much better for him from there.

“Everyone treats him differently because of what he went through,” Matt Duffer says. “At school, they don’t know the true story of what happened but he’s still the boy who everyone thought was dead and there was a funeral for and all this insane stuff. So he feels like more of a freak.”

As for Hopper, he’s still surrounded by the mysteries left behind by the lab. The last time we saw Hopper, he was getting into a strange black car. “Clearly Hopper is caught up with someone, certain people, presumably involved in that car, and Season 2 explores what that involvement is,” said executive producer Shawn Levy. According to Duffer, it seems that Hopper had “made a deal with the devil.” In this case, it was with scientist Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine). We’ll soon get to see the consequences of that.

As for Eleven, the trailer reveals that she’s definitely coming back. From the looks of it, she’s been trapped in the Upside Down for a time. Levy promises that we’ll get to know more about her this season. She’s a full-on character this season,” he said. “Her role is substantial and really satisfying.”

Stranger Things 2 premieres on Netflix October 27, 2017. Just in time for Halloween.
