This week’s Lucifer begins with Mazikeen and Dr. Linda talking in Lux. (I am so excited for a Maze centered episode I can’t even.) Lucifer confirms for Dr. Linda that Maze doesn’t have a soul. When she dies, she will just die. While they are discussing Maze’s penchant for living in the moment, she states her next bounty should be approaching any moment. A young male walks up with a coupon for a free margarita, but it was a ruse of Maze’s to get him there. Maze says she’s getting bored with bounty hunting, and so Lucifer gives her a challenge.
We are then cut to an office where Maze is eating Dan’s pudding and watching an interrogation tape. Lieutenant Herrera, whose office she is sitting in, walks in and then warns her that the criminal she is planning on going after is super dangerous. Maze isn’t worried.
Back at the house, Maze is packing and Chloe keeps trying to tell her she needs to pack for a Canadian winter. Maze clearly doesn’t understand what winter is because all of the clothes she is packing are skimpy. After Chloe and Trixie say their temporary goodbyes, Maze sets on her way to Canada to go after Ben River, her bounty.
After realizing she does indeed need winter wear, we see Maze walk into a cabin. She asks the man behind the counter if he knows the bounty, but he isn’t opening up. She tries to find a way to torture the guy, but he’s not cracking. Finally, she realizes she needs to make it look as if he has been unfaithful. Maze climbs on top of him and then he finally opens up about where he is.
Maze goes undercover as a masseuse in order to get information out of the woman the man behind the counter told her the bounty was seeing. She says that Ben River is a prince and that she is supposed to see him tonight.
Back in the states, Chloe and Lucifer are interrogating Rivers’ lawyer. At first, she doesn’t answer any questions, but Lucifer and Chloe make it clear that it would be in his best interests for them to bring him in before Maze gets a hold of him. After Lucifer does his trick on her, she finally blurts out that she is in love with Rivers, and has been helping him avoid the police. Chloe can’t believe this woman would help a known murderer, but the lawyer states that anyone would be in love with him after having met him.
We are then cut to Maze capturing him. Rivers seems extremely cool and collected. Even Maze is surprised he doesn’t seem worried he’s been captured. Rivers is clearly trying to play Maze. He’s putting the charm on thick. While they are talking, he switches the cuffs Maze put on him onto her. However, he doesn’t realize Maze has a demon’s strength, and she frees herself right away. Chloe calls right afterward because she wants to warn Maze about how emotionally dangerous Rivers can be. Lucifer is not concerned and sends Maze all the information they have collected on Rivers.
Maze is sitting in Rivers’ place and they begin to fight. The fight is everything Maze had been wanting. As they fight, Rivers tells the Lieutenant that sent Maze on this manhunt betrayed him and will betray her, too. Rivers used to bounty hunt for him, until the Lieutenant set him up. Then, room service knocks on the door and it’s a woman Maze recognizes. The lady pulls out a machine gun, and Maze and Rivers go on the run.
Chloe realizes there’s something strange going on with the case and tries to call Maze, but doesn’t get an answer. Maze gets the upper hand on the assailant with one of her knives, but Rivers was still shot.
Lucifer is at Dr. Linda’s when Maze calls. She needs to know how to fix the gunshot wound. Dr. Linda talks Maze through what she needs to know to apply rudimentary first aid on the bullet wound. While they are watching, Lucifer notices that Maze fluffs Rivers’ pillow. Maze realizes she was caught being sweet and immediately ends the video call. Lucifer realizes Rivers broke his Mazikeen.
The next morning, Rivers wakes up and is all sewn up. He states again that he didn’t kill the teens he was accused of killing. He refused because they were kids, but Maze isn’t convinced. While they are talking, there is a knock on the door. Dan has come to check up on Maze on Chloe’s request. Chloe is worried that the Lieutenant has something to do with everything. Maze lets Dan know that’s exactly what Rivers has been saying. She turns around to ask Rivers some details, but he has escaped through the back door.
While Maze is tracking Rivers, Lucifer and Chloe interrogate the one witness that put Rivers away for the case. Lucifer trips the guy up and they realize he’s lying. Chloe deduces that Lieutenant Herrera is the one behind everything, which means Maze is in more trouble than she realizes.
Maze find Rivers, but the room service lady has also found him with three people as backup. Dan shows up, and the three of them take out the four bad guys. However, Rivers opened his stitches and is bleeding again. The police begin to approach, and Dan says he will take care of it. Maze leaves with Rivers.
Back in L.A., Lucifer is sitting in Lieutenant Herrera’s office. Lucifer calls the Lieutenant out for everything he’s done, and Chloe has him arrested. Chloe calls Maze and lets her know it is all taken care of. Maze tells Rivers he’s free to go, and Maze asks him to come back to L.A. with her. He says he’s still going to be on the run but asks Maze to come with him. She kisses him and seems as if she considers it, but we are then cut to Maze back in L.A. surrounded by our heroes. Maze realized that L.A. is exactly where she wants to be, surrounded by her friends.
This episode was absolutely a… wait for it… MAZing. (I know, I know, I’m TOO funny.) Not only do I love Maze the character, but I’ve come to really love the actress. Knowing she was months pregnant while she was shooting this episode made for a fun game of “spot the belly.” The episode had no real tie in with our overall arc this season, other than a very loose hint that the SInnerman might be behind what Herrera was doing. It was still a super fun standalone.
Lucifer airs on FOX on Monday nights at 8PM ET.
