The season premiere of Lucifer begins with an armored truck speeding through the desert. The driver seems really frazzled and then has to come to a full stop before he hits Lucifer, who is standing, wings spread, in the middle of the road. Lucifer realizes the driver is the same person he and Amenadiel caught robbing a bank, back when they were looking for their mother. Lucifer wants a ride back to LA, but the robber doesn’t want to be arrested. Lucifer devises a plan that will help them both out. The next thing we see is the police surrounding the vehicle. Lucifer steps out, wearing the jumpsuit that had previously been worn by the thief. The officers order him to get on the ground, but Lucifer explains that he works with the L.A.P.D and that he has captured the armored vehicle on purpose. The police verify he works with Decker, and then they ask him where the real thief is. The next thing we see is the thief running through the desert wearing nothing but his underwear.
We are then taken to Lucifer’s loft, where he is wheeling Dr. Linda into a room full of pampering, just for her. Linda wonders why Lucifer is acting a little strange, and he shows her his wings. He asks Linda to cut the wings off since Maze is off bounty hunting and not able to. However, Linda is reluctant. She’s not so sure why Lucifer has his wings back. Lucifer is convinced his father gave them back as some sort of punishment, but Linda isn’t so sure. She convinces him to keep the wings for now.
At the police station, Lucifer tells Decker that he had been kidnapped, and they need to figure out who is responsible. Decker doesn’t believe him, though. Lucifer tells her that he’s convinced his father is behind it. Since she is refusing to believe him, he takes her out to the desert to where he woke up. At first, they don’t find anything, but then they discover a hand sticking up from the sand.
The forensics team has made their way to the crime scene. Ella is dramatically reenacting the death of the victim, who had been buried alive at the scene. The only clue they find is a keychain. This is enough for Lucifer to want to get going, but Ella wants to stay and be thorough, as she wants to impress the new lieutenant.
The new lieutenant, Marcus Pierce, walks down the stairs and introduces himself to everyone. He is cold and very snarky. He quickly makes his exit and then Amenadiel approaches and tells Lucifer he needs to talk. Amenadiel didn’t know the fate of their mother and is very saddened to hear she has been expelled to a different galaxy. Lucifer asks Amenadiel if he knows anything about the kidnapping. Lucifer also assumes that Amenadiel has also had his wings returned, but he is wrong. While they are talking, Ella walks in and introduces herself, since she had not previously met Amenadiel. She is clearly a bit thirsty for him. She also has a lead on who owns the keychain, so Lucifer and Decker head to follow the lead.
They arrive at a party where a party is being held. After the suspect makes a few rude comments about Decker, our favorite duo informs him he is the suspect in a murder case. He takes off running, and our heroes follow. Eventually, they catch up to him, and Lucifer throws him over the side of the building into a pool.
In the interrogation room, the suspect is sitting quietly. Lucifer immediately asks why he kidnapped him. The suspect doesn’t know Lucifer, however. The suspect states that the whole thing with the victim was just a part of a series of pranks they used to play on each other. He hired a firm to kidnap his friend, but it wasn’t supposed to be serious.
Meanwhile, Amenadiel shows up at Lucifer’s apartment, where he finds Lucifer’s wings severed and on the ground.
Ella has only one lead, the tire treads of a vehicle that was at the scene. However, it turns out to be a dead end, since the tires are extremely common. Decker realizes they need to go over the Lucifer angle to the case. Lucifer realizes that if Decker is going to be able to understand the case, she will need to know the truth about him. He prepares himself for the potential bad reaction Decker may have to his real face. However, his face doesn’t change. Lucifer doesn’t know why it’s not working, and Decker thinks that he’s just not wanting to be honest with her. She walks out of the room confused.
The new lieutenant is upset that there are no leads. He tells the heroes they will need to hire the company the original suspect hired to kidnap the victim. Dan is going to be the bait.
Ella is creating a coffin for the roadkill she found at the crime scene when Amenadiel walks in. He’s looking for Lucifer. Ella asks if she can help, and at first Amenadiel says no, but then he notices the cross on the coffin Ella created. She asks him if he’s a believer, and when he tells her he is, she comforts him by saying whatever is happening to him is according to God’s plan.
Dan, Chloe, and Lucifer are on an undercover operation. They are trying to get Dan kidnapped by the company who kidnapped the victim. However, Lucifer meddles and ends up being kidnapped instead.
Lucifer is with the kidnappers and begins to interrogate them. He has them taped together in a chair. They tell Lucifer about some people they work with who were supposed to help take care of the victim. Lucifer takes the information and leaves.
Meanwhile, at the police station, Chloe, Dan, and Ella realize that the real killer was with them while they were going over the crime scene. He posed as a fellow police officer from another town. Luckily, they have his license plate and are able to find his identity.
Lucifer arrives at the suspect’s apartment and busts in the door. He begins to interrogate the new suspect about how and why he gave Lucifer his wings back. The poor, scared man explains that he was hired by someone called “The Sinner Man” to abduct Lucifer. He was going to swap Lucifer for our victim in the box, but when he pulled Lucifer out of the back of his van, Lucifer had wings. This scared him and so he drove off, leaving the poor victim still trapped in the box. While he is explaining all of this, Lucifer’s wings return. Apparently, he can’t get rid of them, even by cutting them off.
Lucifer returns to his loft where Amenadiel is waiting for him. Amenadiel tells Lucifer that he’s not mad or jealous that Lucifer has gotten his wings back, but he is upset that Lucifer did not feel as if he could not confide in Amenadiel. Amenadiel tells Lucifer that he believes that God has a special reason for giving Lucifer’s wings back. Lucifer states that he believed it was God at first, but after having found the man who kidnapped him murdered in a very gruesome manner, he now believes that much darker forces are at work.
This season premiere did not disappoint. I am super excited about this new storyline. Tom Welling’s Lt. Marcus Pierce is another fun addition to the show. It will be interesting to see if he is a part of what is going on with Lucifer. The timing of someone new in the precinct just seems a little too perfect. I feel as if he has to play some bigger role in everything. This season is off to the strongest start Lucifer has had thus far. I feel as if we are getting set up for a wild ride, and I can’t wait.
Lucifer airs on FOX on Monday nights at 8PM ET.
