It has been rumored for quite some time that we would be getting a Harry Potter version of Pokemon Go. However, nothing had been confirmed until today.
Today TechCrunch reported that Niantic is moving forward with developing the Harry Potter version. Niantic will be teaming up with Warner Bros. Interactive and its new sub brand Portkey Games to bring us Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in 2018. Considering the huge following behind the Harry Potter properties, it is an easy assumption to make that this app will be just as popular as Pokemon Go.
Pokemon Go took the development and gaming world by storm last year when Niantic released the never-before-seen app to hungry, rabid Pokemon fans. It took every ounce of power for me personally to try to not to find a way to play the game because it was everywhere in 2016. You couldn’t escape it.
Rumors abounded last year when Niantic confirmed that they had purchased rights to go forward with a Harry Potter app. However, those rumors were quickly squashed and articles were taken down even hinting at the rumors.
Although the app is officially happening now, details are hard to come by. I’m sure that they want to keep everything underwraps considering how info-hungry fans of the franchise are. In a perfect world, I would hope that they would aim to release the game around the time the second Fantastic Beasts movie is set to come out since the subject will be trending at that time. We’ll see as we enter the new year.
