With Star Wars: The Last Jedi quickly approaching its release date, we were already preparing ourselves for all sorts of information dumps. However, nothing could have prepared us for today’s news.
Today it was revealed by Deadline that director Rian Johnson has now been tapped by Disney and Lucasfilm to write and direct a trilogy of films set in the Star Wars universe. This trilogy will be a completely new story with new characters and set in a different galaxy. Johnson will be teaming up with Ram Bergman, his longtime collaborator.
This news comes after a year of unprecedented director changes within Lucasfilm projects. Ron Howard had to step in to salvage the Han Solo project. Josh Trank dropped out of the Bobba Fett project. J.J. Abrams was brought back in to direct Episode IX after Colin Trevorrow was fired from the project.
I am immensely curious about where this project will go, but am also super happy that Rian Johnson is getting this opportunity. Having seen his previous projects and after seeing where he has gone creatively with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I believe that Disney and Lucasfilm have made the best move in bringing him in for more projects.
