S.J. Clarkson is in talks to direct Paramount’s upcoming Star Trek 4
The upcoming Star Trek 4 might have a female director. According to THR, S.J. Clarkson who directed the pilot for the Netflix series Jessica Jones is currently in talks for the film. The studio has yet to comment. The script for Star Trek 4 comes to us from J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, and will continue the current reboot of the film franchise that stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Zoe Saldana and Karl Urban.
For reference, this is not the other Star Trek film in development, which is in development. That one will be directed by Quentin Tarantino and will be set in a different timeline. The reboot began back in 2009, and the most recent film Star Trek Beyond was released back in 2016 and took in $158 million in the states and $184 million overseas.
According to the site, studios are working to bring in female directors. I’m thrilled with that particular development. In a post-Patty Jenkins/Wonder Woman industry, it’s about damn time. Their talent and vision, which have always been there. I’m glad it’s finally being recognized. I’m also realistic enough to realize that talent isn’t the only reason. They’re probably less likely to get kicked off a film (or to mess up the publicity when the film is coming out or in theaters) by getting accused of sexual harassment. Perhaps I’m jaded. I’m also happy about the move, whatever prompts it. Look, amazing female directors have been out there forever. I hate that the #MeToo movement was one of the things that is getting them hired. Either way, I loved the Jessica Jones pilot (and the rest of the show) and I’m happy to hear this news.
