Cathy Yan is set to direct Margot Robbie in Harley Quinn film

Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is set to direct the upcoming Harley Quinn film starring Margot Robbie (I, Tonya), according to Deadline . According to the site, Yan was Robbie’s pick for the directing spot. Her film Dead Pigs won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance last year.

The film is set around “Birds of Prey,” which was turned into a TV series back in 2002. I know it wasn’t highly regarded, but I watched it every week–live, even. There was a shortage of female superheroes as you know, and I was willing to watch anything if they appeared in it. Though we don’t know which characters will appear in the Harley Quinn film, they are generally Black Canary, Barbara Gordon and Huntress. The script for the film has been written by Christina Hodson who also wrote Bumblebee, which we discussed on this past week’s Legion of Leia podcast, as she is set to write the upcoming Batgirl film. The Harley Quinn film should begin production late this year or early next year, according to the site. As you likely know, Robbie played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. I have made no secret of my intense distaste for that film, but Robbie nailed the role.

Cathy Yan was a journalist for the Wall Street Journal and has directed a number of shorts. I’m curious what you guys think about the choice. I’m thrilled that they chose a female director, and Yan will be the first Asian woman to direct a superhero film. Leave us your thoughts about the choice below or tweet us @LegionofLeia.
