Welcome to the Legion!

It was announced today that Jennifer Lee (Frozen) and Peter Docter (Up) will be taking over Walt Disney Animation and Pixar Animation Studios respectfully.  This news comes after the reveal earlier this month about John Lasseter leaving Disney•Pixar at the end of the year.

Many have wondered who will take over Lasseter’s role at Disney after the announcement of his departure. I believe many will be satisfied by the decision to bring these two on, especially at Lee breaking further ground in the animation industry with her new position at Walt Disney Animation Studios.

When asked her thoughts about her thoughts and plans for Disney, Jennifer Lee responded:

“Animation is the most collaborative art form in the world, and it is with the partnership of my fellow filmmakers, artists, and innovators that we look ahead to the future. My hope is to support the incredible talent we have, find new voices, and work together to tell original stories. The great films of Disney Animation – the films I loved as a kid and my daughter has grown up loving – are magical, timeless, and full of heart, and it is our goal to create films that carry on and grow this 95-year legacy for future generations.”

Jennifer Lee is most known for her work on the worldwide phenomenon that was Frozen. She is currently in production right now on the sequel, Frozen 2. Lee first got her start at Disney co-writing the script for Wreck-It Ralph. She is serving as an executive producer on Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2.

Peter Docter added his own excitement to the mix in an official statement:

“I am excited and humbled to be asked to take on this role. It is not something I take lightly; making films at Pixar has been my chronic obsession since I started here 28 years ago. I am fortunate to work alongside some of the most talented people on the planet, and together we will keep pushing animation in new directions, using the latest technology to tell stories we hope will surprise and delight audiences around the world.”

Docter was one of Pixar’s first employees when the animation studios was first established. He’s contributed in some fashion to almost all of the stories that Pixar has released. Most people know him for directing Monsters Inc., Up, and Inside Out. His taking over Lasseter’s role at Pixar Animation Studios seems very fitting considering all of the years he has grown with the company.
