SDCC: DC Titans trailer tries to be edgy
DC Entertainment has released the first official trailer for their upcoming TV series Titans and it is just not good. Though, to be perfectly honest, I am not sure many of us were expecting it to be good to begin with.
I’m going to preface this saying that I grew up with Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans series, so this has definitely impaired my expectations for any other Titans-related project moving forward. However, despite my own preconceived notions about this project, the trailer definitely left a lot to be desired regardless of whether or not you are a fan of these band of heroes.
The main focus of the trailer is on an angsty Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) and on a young Raven (Teagan Croft). This Dick Grayson is not anything we’ve seen in live-action. He’s angsty. He has no problem unleashing a can of whoop ass on criminals. Oh, and he curses the name of Batman. However, the delivery of the character isn’t great. We are supposed to feel sorry for Dick when we see a short clip of his tragic backstory, but there isn’t much to really sympathize with as the trailer plays out.
Then there’s Raven. One of the biggest story arcs for her has always been grappling with the darkness inside of her. However, seeing a younger Raven deal with this arc doesn’t really hit home for me. It makes me think that eventually, it will lead to the trope of a bunch of adults protecting a young, superpowered child. Which, in a series that is being marketed as dark and angsty, makes me roll my eyes a little bit. Also, the hairline of Raven’s wig really bothered me, but now I am just being immensely picky.
We do get clips of Beast Boy (Ryan Potter), Starfire (Anna Diop), and Hawk and Dove (Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly) fighting throughout the course of the trailer, but nothing that we can really judge on. I will say that the way they edited Starfire’s powers isn’t as bad as I was expecting. But this may change as more footage is revealed.
Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson/Robin, Teagan Croft as Raven, Anna Diop as Koriand’r/Starfire, Alan Ritchson and Minka Kelly as Hawk and Dove, Bruno Bichir as Dr. Niles Caulder, and Lindsey Gort as Police Detective Amy Rohrbach.
Titans comes from executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter. In the action-packed series, Dick Grayson emerges from the shadows to become the leader of a fearless band of new heroes, including Starfire, Raven and many others.
The series will premiere on the DC streaming service when it launches later this year. Until then, let us know what you think about the trailer.
