The DC Universe has some new female superheroes today. The Warner Bros./DC film was recently moved to February 7, 2020. Margot Robbie is, of course, reprising her Suicide Squad role of Harley Quinn. According to Deadline, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo, 10 Cloverfield LaneScott Pilgrim vs. the World) is set to play the role of Huntress in the film, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (UndergroundFriday Night LightsHands of Stone) will play the role of Black Canary. Rene Montoya has not been cast yet, though the site says it’s between Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) and Roberta Colindrez (Vida).

Birds of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan (According to My MotherDead Pigs). Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) penned the script. Margot Robbie’s Luckychap will produce the film with Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless from Clubhouse Pictures.

We have certainly lacked in female superheroes, and any chance to see women fronting a film in the genre is wonderful. Having a female director of color and a female writer just caps it off. Though I was hardly a fan of Suicide Squad, and I was certainly not alone in that, Margot Robbie was the highlight of the film. I may not have agreed with the take on her (and I know that’s up for debate), I thought she did a great job with what she was given. It will be fascinating to see what she does with the role here.

Of course, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the casting of Huntress and Black Canary. What do you think of the coming film? Let us know in the comments or tweet us @LegionofLeia.
