UPDATED: Henry Cavill leaves DCCU and Superman behind!
In what many might argue as an event long coming, it was revealed today in an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter that Henry Cavill will be shirking off the big S and red cape for good and leaving Superman behind.
According to the report, Warner Bros. is not planning on making a Superman film for quite some time. A studio insider also noted that Warner Bros. recognized that ‘some parts of the previous movies didn’t work’ and that the studio is aiming on hitting a reset button on their current DCCU and steer the franchise into another more standalone focused direction. Whatever they decide though will no longer include Cavill.
As of the initial publication of the story, Warner Bros has come out with an official statement regarding the situation:
“While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged.”
Henry Cavill has plenty of work coming at him despite leaving the role of Superman behind. Just a week ago, it was revealed by Netflix that Cavill would be taking on the role of Geralt of Rivia in their upcoming adaptation of The Witcher.
Geralt of Rivia, for those who are unfamiliar, is a solitary monster hunter who has struggled to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together. Netflix is aiming for a 2020 release, which provides fans of Cavill certainty as to when we will see him next.
Superman is not the only one that may be phased out. Within the same exclusive, it was mentioned that Ben Affleck might be on his way out as Batman. However, this news might also not come out as a surprise given how many difficulties have been had behind-the-scenes on the solo Batman movie that Affleck was trying to make with Warner Bros. If Affleck does leave, one does wonder how Warner Bros. will attack the casting process if they plan on bringing both big-time DC superheros back into the fold.
Henry Cavill has portrayed Superman since Warner Bros. launched their DC Cinematic Universe with 2013’s Man of Steel. He appeared two more times in the DCCU in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.
What do you think of this news? Do you think this restructuring from Warner Bros will finally fix the DC Cinematic Universe or will it further aggravate the problems it already has? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us at @LegionofLeia.
