Reactions to the New Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer

The end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them gave me that OMG moment when I realized who Percival Graves (Colin Farrell) really was, just milliseconds before the reveal that he was actually Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). The first non-Harry Potter Wizarding World film blew me away. With Harry, we primarily saw the kids learning what magic was, with limited spells being thrown around. Here in Fantastic Beasts, there was magic everywhere.

Fast forward to today, as the final trailer for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was released this morning, and to say I’m excited is an understatement! While Wizarding World fans around the world weigh in, here’s one Potter-head’s reaction – mine.  Obviously I suggest you watch it first, as not to spoil any surprises.

Now, let’s break it down.

We open on Dumbledore giving Newt the address of a safe house in Paris.  Sounds a little like Grimmauld Place version 1.0 (you know, since this takes place first), and Dumbledore’s the Secret-Keeper. Poor Newt doesn’t realize what he’s getting into yet.

This appears to be Grindelwald’s escape from the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), but what exactly is this spell?

Holy reveal, J.K. Rowling!  Nagini?!  Up until this point, all we’ve heard about Claudia Kim’s character is that she’s a Maledictus, or a human with a blood curse.  But this, THIS changes things.  Even J.K. Rowling weighed in to clarify that this character is NOT an Animagus.   With three movies left after the Crimes of Grindelwald, could this be setting us up to see how Nagini and Voldemort meet?

The shots of Grindelwald in the carriage are a little too quick to see exactly who Grindelwald’s fighting, and it almost looks like he’s fighting another Grindelwald!  Is there some Polyjuice Potion at work here?  Sounds like another escape we know about (I’m looking at you Barty Crouch Jr.).  Also, Depp looks pretty spectacular as the villain here.  I know there’s some debate about his involvement with the films, but I’m on board.

The imagery of the black “curtains” above the buildings is gorgeous.  Are they all obscurials, or wizards and witches disapparating?  Maybe just Credence (Ezra Miller)?

Another glimpse at Nicolas Flamel!  The initial reveal of the character came at the end of the last trailer, and I’m excited to see how he fits into the story.  We already know his involvement with the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone.

I hope this means we’re finally get to see more of the Dumbledore backstory.  One of the things we missed in the book-to-film transition was more about young Dumbledore, his family, and his relationship to Grindelwald (along with the backstory to Voldemort, but I digress).  That’s definitely young Grindelwald in the Mirror of Erised.

After a brief mention in the first film, it looks like we’ll be seeing much more of Leta Lestrange.  When she tells Newt he never met a monster he couldn’t love – I’m certain she means herself.

Something about the look on Credence’s face makes me very worried for him.

Finally, of course, more fantastic beasts!  I’m going to have to consult my personal copy of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” to identify these!

What are you most excited to see?  Let us know in the comments!
