Idris Elba to join the cast of Cats
Deadline has reported that Idris Elba (Luther) is in talks to join the cast of Universal’s Cats, a feature film adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical. Tom Hooper, who brought us 2012’s Les Misérables, is set to direct.
Elba joins fellow cast members Taylor Swift (The Giver), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings), James Corden (Into the Woods), Laurie Davidson (Will), and relative newcomer Mette Towley in this colorful musical set in the junkyard. Reportedly, Elba will be playing Macavity, the story’s “villain.”
The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical was originally based on the book Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot, and first opened in 1981 in the West End and in 1982 on Broadway. Cats is now one of the longest-running shows in both Broadway and West End history, and can regularly be found on tour around the country.
For those who have never experienced this award-winning musical in person, here’s an overview from the Broadway show’s official site: The Jellicle Cats come out one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.
More details are sure to come, as the film is currently in pre-production. Are you excited to see Idris Elba as our villainous feline? Let us know in the comments or tweet us at @LegionofLeia
