Simon Pegg announced as part of The Boys cast at NYCC
Simon Pegg (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Hot Fuzz) has joined the cast of Amazon’s The Boys adaptation. The news was announced at New York Comic-Con today as Pegg appeared on stage. Pegg will reportedly play the father of Hughie, played by Jack Quad. Pegg actually inspired the character in the Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson comic series. The Boys is executive produced by Eric Kripke and Evan Goldberg. Pegg was joined on stage by Quad, Kripke and Robertson as well as Karl Urban.
The Boys is set between 2006 and 2008, and tells the story of a world where superheroes exist but are media-focused and corrupted celebrities. A CIA squad called The Boys must monitor the community of heroes. The Boys was written by Ennis and co-created, designed and illustrated by Robertson. It was published by Wildstorm, then moved to Dynamite Entertainment. The group of superheroes is called “Seven.”
The Boys is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities, as influential as politicians and as revered as Gods – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. It’s the powerless against the super powerful as The Boys embark on a heroic quest to expose the truth about “The Seven,” and Vought – the multibillion dollar conglomerate that manages these superheroes.
The Supes of “The Seven” are A-TRAIN (Jessie T. Usher, Independence Day: Resurgence), HOMELANDER (Antony Starr, Banshee), STARLIGHT (Erin Moriarty, Captain Fantastic), QUEEN MAEVE (Dominique McElligott, House of Cards), THE DEEP (Chace Crawford, Gossip Girl) and BLACK NOIR (Nathan Mitchell, Supernatural).
Along with Quaid, The Boys are rounded out by BUTCHER (Karl Urban, Star Trek), MOTHER’S MILK (Laz Alonso, Detroit), FRENCHIE (Tomer Kapon, Hostages) and THE FEMALE (Karen Fukuhara, Suicide Squad).
The Amazon Studios hour-long superhero drama is developed and written by showrunner Eric Kripke (Supernatural). The eight-episode Prime Original series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and executive produced by Kripke, Point Grey Pictures’ Evan Goldberg (Preacher), Seth Rogen (Preacher) and James Weaver (Preacher), Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz (Prison Break), Ori Marmur (Preacher) and Pavun Shetty (New Girl), as well as Jason Netter and Ken Levin. Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson, who created the comic book on which the series is based, will also co-executive produce.
The Boys is scheduled for a 2019 global release, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in over 200 countries and territories.
