Derek Mears is the Swamp Thing!

Just when you didn’t think that more casting news would be unleashed, the powers behind the upcoming Swamp Thing adaptation reveal more! Deadline reported that Derek Mears has been cast as the titular powered up bog monster after Andy Bean’s Alec Holland gets dragged into the darkness that seems to inhabit the Louisianan swamp.

Most will be familiar with Mears’ work as Jason Voorhees in the recent reboot of Friday the 13th. He also recently appeared as Dwarfstar in The CW’s The Flash and as Renzo in the revisitation of Twin Peaks.

Swamp Thing is written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, and the two will executive produce with Wiseman, Wan and Michael Clear.

The outlet describes this version of Abby Arcane as follows:

Smart and caring, CDC Doctor Abby Arcane’s (Crystal Reed) strong sense of empathy puts her at the center of a horrific life-threatening epidemic in her hometown, where she faces emotional demons from her past… while a chance meeting with scientist Alec Holland takes her into a world of horror and the supernatural, and of the elemental creature known as Swamp Thing.

Swamp Thing first appeared in House of Secrets #92 in July of 1971. He has appeared in two feature films, an animated series and more. He often tackles environmental issues in his stories as he tries to protect his swamp home. Madame Xanadu, on the other hand, just celebrated her 40th anniversary in the DC Comics.

The series will premiere on the DC Universe digital subscription service and is based on the characters from DC Comics created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. Swamp Thing is on the way from James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Warner Bros. Television.
