It was revealed by Variety that newcomer Ella Jay Basco will be joining the cast of Birds of Prey as Cassandra Cain.

For those familiar with the world of Batman, Cassandra Cain eventually becomes Batgirl in the DC Comics. However, the likelihood of her becoming Batgirl in the upcoming Birds of Prey remains to be seen since Warner Bros. is also developing a separate Batgirl film. She joins Margot Robbie, who will be reprising her role of Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo, 10 Cloverfield LaneScott Pilgrim vs. the World) is set to play the role of Huntress in the film, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (UndergroundFriday Night LightsHands of Stone) will play the role of Black Canary. Rene Montoya will be played by Rosie Perez. Ewan McGregor (Christopher Robin, Fargo) is set to play the villain Black Mask in the film.

Birds of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan (According to My MotherDead Pigs). Christina Hodson (Bumblebee) penned the script. Margot Robbie’s Luckychap will produce the film with Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless from Clubhouse Pictures.

Birds of Prey is set to be released in theaters on February 7, 2020. What do you think of this news? Let us know in the comments below or tweet us at @LegionofLeia.
